From Steve Heilig ("All Over the Map" columnist): I only saw him perform live once, years ago at the Sierra Nevada World Music Fest. He was using a cane and sat on a stool for the whole set, with a microphone set in front of him. Eyes closed, veteran roots band churning behind him, he chanted out song after song, and the crowd was a small sea of reverent, stunned, upturned faces, paying rapt attention. More than any set I recall, it was like watching some prophet, down from the mountain or in from the desert, delivering sermons to the masses. Unforgettable.
